The Meadow Verse.
For Springtij, Lucinda will perform a solo ritual to crown the Princess of the Feast.
17th Century poet Robert Herrick was vicar of the Church at Dean Prior, a small village on the outskirts of Dartmoor National Park in the South West of England. His thousands of poems reveal lore and liturgy of the time—feast days, crude theatre and Morris dancing, drinking, plant symbolism, beloved pets, farting witches, spells and charms. This treasure trove of magical, hedonistic texts are being dragged back into the light by The Meadow Verse, (pronounced Metaverse), a loose collective of artists and musicians living in Herrick’s neighbourhood, re-inventing his work through sung rituals, composed by Lucinda Guy.
In the church, under motorways, in rivers, around transmitters, with bells, bread, cake, casio keyboards, pasta machines, kazoos, flutes, fiddles, bodily fluids, flower crowns and tape recorders, they revive the words and practices of 300 years ago, with no respect for historical accuracy but deep respect for Herrick’s vivid, vulgar worldview.
Smolders / Ligtvoet (nl)
De muziek van Jos Smolders balanceert op het snijvlak van het concrete en abstracte. Zijn concerten prikkelen het publiek, dat telkens op het puntje van de stoel zit. Ook hij speelt met alledaagse geluiden, maar in een vervreemde vorm, waarin vertrouwde klanken nieuwe betekenissen krijgen.
Jostijn Ligtvoet verkent het grensgebied tussen akoestisch en elektronisch. Zijn cello en modulaire synthesizer vormen samen een unieke klankwereld, waarin improvisatie centraal staat. Met veel herhalingen en een liefde voor ruis en lange tonen bouwt hij hypnotiserende composities op.
In hun samenspel ontstaat een boeiend spel van ritme en ruis. Hun samenwerking creëert een wereld waarin het herkenbare vervloeit met het onbekende. Smolders’ percussieve klanken en Ligtvoets experimentele geluiden vormen een hypnotiserende voorstelling vol spanning en onverwachte wendingen.
Jos Smolders’ music balances on the intersection of the concrete and the abstract. His concerts excite the audience, who are always on the edge of their seats. He also plays with everyday sounds, but in an alienated form, in which familiar sounds are given new meanings.
Jostijn Ligtvoet explores the border area between acoustic and electronic. His cello and modular synthesizer together form a unique sound world, in which improvisation is central. With many repetitions and a love for noise and long tones, he builds hypnotic compositions. Their interplay creates a fascinating game of rhythm and noise. Their collaboration creates a world in which the recognizable merges with the unknown. Smolders’ percussive sounds and Ligtvoet’s experimental sounds form a hypnotic performance full of tension and unexpected twists.
Jacob Audrey Taves (Canada)
Communicating in a language of errors, hum, crackle, feedback and found sounds and images, audio and visual artist Jacob Audrey Taves explores themes of alienation, post-industrial anxiety and the push and pull between macro and micro social, political and sonic frameworks. Utilizing the fragile nature of malfunctioning equipment and exposing unintentional media artifacts, Taves’ work gives errors room to develop and to have voices of their own in an emotive, free-form structure.
Throughout their various bands and projects they have toured Europe, Canada, USA, Mexico and Japan, sharing billing with Merzbow, Keiji Haino, Venetian Snares, Freida Abtan, John Oswald, Mark Hosler (Negativland), People Like Us, DJ Olive, William Hooker, Zea, Andy Moor, Robert Henke and others. They have performed at the Vancouver International Jazz Festival (Canada), Hamsylet (Ukraine), Body Machine Body (Estonia), ZNFI (Slovenia), Yaga Gathering (Lithuania), 4D Festival (Japan) and have been an artist in residence at Les Pixels Transverseux (Sevres, France), Hammock (Vancouver, Canada) and PAVED Art and New Media (Saskatoon, Canada).
Audio- en beeldend kunstenaar Jacob Audrey Taves communiceert in een taal van errors, gezoem, gekraak, feedback en gevonden geluiden en beelden. Taves onderzoekt thema’s als vervreemding, postindustriële angst en de ‘push and pull’ tussen macro- en micro-sociale, politieke en sonische kaders. Door gebruik te maken van de fragiele aard van defecte apparatuur en het blootleggen van onbedoelde media-artefacten, geeft het werk van Taves fouten de ruimte om zich te ontwikkelen en om een eigen stem te krijgen in een emotionele, vrije structuur.
Gedurende hun verschillende bands en projecten hebben ze door Europa, Canada, de VS, Mexico en Japan getourd, waarbij ze de facturering deelden met Merzbow, Keiji Haino, Venetian Snares, Freida Abtan, John Oswald, Mark Hosler (Negativland), People Like Us, DJ Olive, William Hooker, Zea, Andy Moor, Robert Henke en anderen. Organza Ray (Berlin)
Organza Ray are Hilary Jeffery and Eleni Poulou, working together since 2022. Their music is a form of conversation evolved together and with others live and in their studio – Berlintune.Their work includes collaborations with many other musicians and artists, live and in the studio, connecting pathways of knowledge through sound. Improvised soundtracks to spontaneous storytelling have transformed into future folk songs. They are actively discovering shimmering entrances and underwater arches. 400 years of long notes, open bags and dancing butterflies.
Eleni Poulou
Eleni Poulou has recorded and toured worldwide with many groups including The Fall and Shizuo, and is currently working with Wolfgang Seidel, Bomb Sniffing Dogs and Labreylien. She hosts regular radio shows such as “Elope” on Cashmere Radio and “Kastra” on Stegi Radio, and has appeared on Montezpress Radio, Rinse France, RTM FM, Noods Radio and NTS with Ono Tesla. Eleni also DJs, writes poetry, creates sound collages, composes music and makes zines with artists such as Theresa Patzschke. She is one half of NOHE NOSHE together with Petr Step Kišur. Her most recent solo album is “Karta” which merges Greek Pontic music with other sounds and beats.
Hilary Jeffery
Hilary Jeffery has performed in theatres, museums, jazz clubs, cathedrals, night clubs, festivals, dance studios, bars, cinemas, galleries, streets, forests and mountains. He plays brass instruments, piano, electronics as well as teaching and composing music. His current projects include the brass trio Zinc & Copper, Etude (Ensemble Treffen Um Die Ecke), an ensemble dedicated to the music of Philip Corner, and Mullet – a modern jazz band with Tobias Delius and Charly Birkenhauer. The sense of silent space he experienced during a journey to the Sahara Desert in 1990 is a central and sustaining influence on Hilary’s work.
Organza Ray (Berlijn)
Organza Ray zijn Hilary Jeffery en Eleni Poulou, die sinds 2022 samenwerken. Hun muziek is een vorm van conversatie die samen en met anderen is ontwikkeld, live en in hun studio – Berlintune. Hun werk omvat samenwerkingen met veel andere muzikanten en artiesten, live en in de studio, waarbij kennispaden worden verbonden door middel van geluid. Geïmproviseerde soundtracks voor spontane verhalen zijn getransformeerd in toekomstige volksliederen. Ze ontdekken actief glinsterende ingangen en onderwaterbogen. 400 jaar lange noten, open zakken en dansende vlinders.

Hilary Jeffery

Hij bespeelt koperblaasinstrumenten, piano, elektronica en geeft les en componeert muziek. Zijn huidige projecten omvatten het kopertrio Zinc & Copper, Etude (Ensemble Treffen Um Die Ecke), een ensemble gewijd aan de muziek van Philip Corner, en Mullet – een moderne jazzband met Tobias Delius en Charly Birkenhauer. Het gevoel van stille ruimte dat hij ervoer tijdens een reis naar de Sahara-woestijn in 1990 is een centrale en aanhoudende invloed op Hilary’s werk.
